Earned love is an oxymoron

There are a lot of oxymorons around - phrases in which one word appears to contradict the next. For example, ‘sanitary landfill’, ‘military intelligence’, ‘council worker’. I believe ‘earned love’is an oxymoron too. You don't earn love, you give love irrespective of whether the beloved deserves to be loved. True love loves even the unworthy.

US psychiatrist, Dr Karl Menninger, said, 'Love is a basic need of human nature, for without it, life is disrupted emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically.’ We all need to be loved. As a matter of fact, it is the greatest need of all humanity. Alfred Lord Tennyson said that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Isn't it amazing that in a game of tennis love means nothing, zero; but in life love is everything. Love is seeking to make another person happy. I used to say to myself, ‘I just want someone to love me,’ and then I realised that is the philosophy of an empty person. But to truly love you must seek to love someone. You see, you can only love out of fullness, you cannot love out of emptiness. You love your children, your spouse, and yourself out of fullness.

The story is told of a young soldier in the Korean War who telephoned his mother to say, ‘Mum, I’m coming home.’ The parents were so happy that they said, ‘Son, we can’t wait for you get home, we haven’t seen you in a long time.’ The son said, ‘But Mum, Dad, I want to do one thing, I want to bring a friend home’. ‘Sure son,’ they said, ‘bring as many as you like.’ He said, ‘No Mum, you don’t understand, this friend of mine has suffered a lot through a bomb blast. He lost his right eye.’ ‘Well bring him with you,’ the parents told him. ‘He can come and be with us for a while.’ The son responded: ‘But Mum, you don’t understand, not only did he lose his right eye, but he lost his right arm and his right leg as well.’ His mother said to him, ‘Son, we are so happy that you are coming home that we want you to bring friends, but don’t you realize that after a while this boy is going to be a burden on us financially? If you want him to stay with us for a long time, you have to understand the challenges it presents us. We are going to have to restructure our home. This is going to be a burden for all of us, son, so just come on home. But bring your friend, he can stay for a while, but we can’t have him stay with us forever.’

The young soldier hung up the phone. A few weeks later the parents received a letter from the military saying that their son had fallen from a balcony in his apartment. To their horror, when they went to identify the body, they discovered that the boy who had lost the eye, the arm, and the leg was their own son. He had been testing his parents to find out if his love had to be earned.

You see, earned love is an oxymoron. We choose to give it, and we must give it unconditionally.

Challenge

My friend, today understand that you are special. You are loved. And when you understand that, it is amazing how much love you can pour into other people’s lives. Maybe one of the reasons why people can't give love is because they have never been given love. They don't have it, because no one has given them love. But once you receive it, it is easy to pour it out to others. So receive someone’s love today, and then give some of that love to someone else.
